WWT Consulting were commissioned by Aggregrate Industries in 2001 to advise on the restoration of Swineham Bestwell Quarry, a former gravel extraction quarry near Wareham, Dorset. The project involved detailed hydrological analysis, design of suitable habitat restoration plans for the site and supervision of construction and planting.

Detailed water balance and water level modelling was undertaken to ensure adjacent properties remained beyond the potential flood envelope and that appropriate water levels could be achieved for a range of wetland habitats. Careful setting out of desired landform levels and close site supervision was undertaken to ensure the designed habitats would be successful.

After construction, a five year aftercare plan was produced for the various wetland habitats created. WWT Consulting also ran a number of biodiversity training courses for operations staff from Aggregate Industries to help them manage for different species at their sites.
